A 12 de Agosto de 1984 Portugal conquistou a sua primeira medalha de ouro em Jogos Olímpicos através do maratonista Carlos Lopes.
Os Jogos Olímpicos de 1984 foram os que acompanhei mais de perto - passei aqueles 15 dias de Agosto a ver tudo o que a televisão transmitia sobre as diversas modalidades.
Alguns dias antes tínhamos apanhado uma grande desilusão quando Fernando Mamede, grande favorito à vitória nos 10.000 metros, andou metade da prova no último lugar e depois cedeu á pressão e seguiu a corrida directamente da pista para os balneários.
A última hipótese de Portugal era na maratona masculina com Carlos Lopes.
Eu até tinha assistido à final dos 10.000 metros dos Jogos Olímpicos de 1976 em Montreal quando Carlos Lopes ganhou uma medalha de prata atrás do finlandês Paavo Nurmii. Lembro-me de estar no Café Portugal onde o meu avô Manuel estava a jogar dominó e ver na teelvisão toda a corrida...
Desta vez e após o efeito Mamede a esperança não era muita - Lopes tinha sido atropelado uns dias antes, o australiano Rob de Castella era favorito... decidi ficar a assistir sozinho à prova num velho televisor a preto e branco Aciko até ao momento em que o Lopes ficasse para trás.... o problema é que o homem não ficou para trás e foi uma grande alegria quando se isolou e fui tendo cada vez mais a convicção de que ia ganhar...
Acabei a esperar até às 05.00 horas da manhã para assistir à cerimónia de entrega das medalhas e ainda hoje lembro as palavras do speaker - "golden medalist, representing Portugal, olympic champion Carlos Lopes..."
